La Leche group to meet

AUBURN — The La Leche League offers breastfeeding information and encouragement to pregnant women, new mothers and growing families. Services offered include monthly meetings and 24-hour telephone help.

All interested women are invited to attend the next meeting to be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at 102 Bennett Ave. Babies are always welcome. Pregnancy is an ideal time to begin attending meetings in preparation for baby’s arrival and mothers find continued support throughout their breastfeeding experience. All concerns about breastfeeding are welcome for discussion in addition to the scheduled topic, “Breastfeeding, the Mother-Baby Relationship, and the Weaning Process.”

Dar to honor Good Citizens

AUBURN — The annual Good Citizens recognition program of Mary Dillingham Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the United Methodist Church of Auburn on Park Street. The winners , their parents and teacher representatives will be honored at a reception following the awards.

Rebecca Johnson from the DAR Speakers Corp will present a program on the Salem Witch Trials. She is descended from a participant in those trials.

The Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890, and Mary Dillingham Chapter was among the first in the state to be chartered. The chapter is responsible for founding the Androscoggin Historical Society, and was influential in getting grants for the Lewiston Public Library from Andrew Carnegie. Service is still on the agenda for the chapter, which supports veterans, the active duty troops and encourages patriotic education. Contact Bev Robbins at 577-0706 for more information.

Historical group open house

MECHANIC FALLS — A bayonet dated from the 1850s, a book of poetry written by Lewiston native Marsden Hartley and a photo album of students who attended Water Street School in 1964-65 will be among the items featured at the Mechanic Falls Historical Society day-long open house on Wednesday, April 11, at 64 Elm St.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will showcase the society’s collection of the town’s memorabilia. Both the upstairs and the downstairs area of the former First Congregational Church on Elm Street will be exhibiting artifacts, photographs and documents of the town’s past.

As a nucleus to the open house the society will host the third-, fourth- and fifth-graders from Elm Street School at separate hour-long visits throughout the day: The fourth grade from 8:30-9:30, the fifth grade from 11 to noon and the third grade from 1-2 p.m. A short review of the town’s history will be presented by the society’s president, Eriks Petersons, at the beginning of the classes’ visit followed by a tour of the building and its collection.

Until it was incorporated in 1893 the village of Mechanic Falls had been part of both the towns of Poland and Minot and served as the area’s economic center for many years.

The public is welcomed to attend and light refreshments will be available.

Hawk watching at Bradbury

POWNAL — There will be a bird watching field trip with the Stanton Bird Club of Lewiston/Auburn from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 14, at Bradbury Mountain State Park. Each spring a person watches daily from Bradbury Mountain, counting migrating hawks. The “mountain” is a short, easy climb.

Artist to speak at Auburn library

AUBURN — The month-long celebration of the arts continues at the Auburn Public Library at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, with a lecture by local painter Michael Ranucci. There will be a discussion of Ranucci’s unique artistic style.

AUBURN — Auburn School Department will hold kindergarten registration at the following schools and times.

Parents should call their neighborhood school for an appointment. Those not sure which school their child will be attending may call the transportation department for assistance at 333-6658.

The child’s legal birth certificate, social security card and all records of immunizations are required at registration.

The Auburn School Department offers full-day kindergarten. Parents may talk with the school principal if there are concerns about this option.

Legion meets resume April 17

MONMOUTH — American Legion Post 204 is scheduled to resume meeting at the Monmouth Fish and Game building on the third Tuesday of the month, running from April through October.

All members are invited to attend the Tuesday, April 17, meeting.

Surgical advances

LEWISTON — Dr. David Wexler of St. Mary’s Center for Orthopaedics will give a presentation from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in the Bank of America Room, Women’s Health Pavilion, 330 Sabattus St.

Wexler will discuss new technology and procedures that cause less trauma during surgery and lead to a faster recovery. He’ll also talk about how knee replacements last much longer than replacements made just a decade ago. There will be an opportunity to ask questions.

Workshop for parents, teens

LEWISTON — The Lewiston-Auburn Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative and Healthy Androscoggin will host a free spring workshop for Lewiston and Auburn parents and teens called Families in Action. The workshop is oriented to families with children in grades 6 through 9. It begins Wednesday, April 25, at 5 p.m.

Families in Action is a six-week program that helps parents and teens improve family communication and problem solving. Families will learn important information and strategies in the areas of courage and self-esteem, responsibility and discipline, cooperation and communication, teen behavior and problem solving. Families in Action also provides parents with powerful prevention strategies in the areas of substance abuse, violence and sexuality.
