KLT paddle to beach, island

WINTHROP — KLT Outing Club will hold a Loon Paddle to Sunset Beach on Hodgdon Island, Lake Cobbossee, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4.

Join Lisa Kane, natural science educator, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and the Kennebec Land Trust Outing Club for a paddle to Sunset Beach on Hodgdon Island, for a picnic and swimming. Kane will begin with a short educational program about loons, then the group will canoe or kayak on Cobbossee Lake. Meet at the outlet dam on Cobbossee Stream; park along Collins Road.

Pack a picnic lunch. Bring your own kayak/canoe. If you do not have a boat and would still like to come, call the KLT office. To preregister and for directions, call 377-2848.

Go-to-Church day for Grange

MINOT — On Sunday, Aug. 5, member of Androscoggin Pomona Grange No. 1 will attend the Minot Center Congregational Church on Center Minot Hill Road as part of their annual Go-to-Church Sunday. The service begins at 9 a.m. and members are asked to be at the church at 8:45.

Following the service members will hold the annual planning meeting for preparing for the upcoming 2013 Pomona schedule and will also decided when to play mini golf later this month.

JA seeks volunteer teachers

LEWISTON — Junior Achievement of Androscoggin County needs volunteers for the upcoming fall semester to teach JA classes in area elementary, middle and high schools. JA mentors educate students about free enterprise, financial literacy, workforce readiness and entrepreneurship.

“We reached 629 students last year in Androscoggin County, but we still have JA Program requests from educators in many schools that need to be fulfilled,” said Jill Jamison, area board operations director. “JA provides all the training, material and support you need, including detailed lesson plans and the resources needed to lead activities.”

Volunteer opportunities are available at three levels and require approximately one hour per week for five to seven sessions, depending on the program. For more information, contact Jill Jamison at 592-7784 or jjamison@jamaine.org.

Puppeteers at Sawyer Memorial

GREENE —  The annual Children’s Day program will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug 9, at the Araxine Wilkins Sawyer Memorial, 371 Sawyer Road. The Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers will feature “The Legend of the Banana Kid” with 20 hand-crafted glove, rod and mouth puppets.

Arctic explorer is focus

GREENE — On Friday, Aug. 10, Mary Morton Cowan will narrate “Capt. Mac: The Life of Donald Baxter MacMillan, Arctic Explorer,” at the Araxine Wilkins Sawyer Memorial, 371 Sawyer Road. The program will be accompanied by vintage slides of MacMillan’s exploits to the North Pole in 1905 with Admiral Peary and other trips to Greenland. DAR members to meet Aug. 11
