LEWISTON — Corey Conner won a pair of events to lead the University of Maine women’s track and field team to a second place finish with 192.50 points at the Bates Invitational on Saturday
Conner took top honors in the mile with an ECAC-qualifying and top-3 school mark of 4:51.63. She also won the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:00.05.
Jaclyn Masters of Auburn won the pole vault in a tie-breaker with a top-5 school mark of 10-06.00, and Ashten Hackett, also of Maine, had a second-place finish in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.46.
In the men’s competition, James Reed set the school record in the 60 meter hurdles and qualified for the IC4A Championships to lead the University of Maine men’s track and field team to a win at the Bates Invitational with 239.50 points.
Frank Del Duca of Bethel won a pair of events, including the 60 meters in a top-5 school time of 7.01, which just missed qualifying for the IC4A Championships. He also won the long jump with 22-05.75. Kelton Cullenberg won the 5,000 in a time of 15:26.85 as well as the 3,000 with a time of 8:35.80.
Men’s basketball
Binghamton 57, Maine 56
ORONO — The University of Maine men’s basketball team fell to Binghamton 57-56 at Memorial Gym on Saturday afternoon.
Maine was led by its America East Player of the Game Justin Edwards, who had 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
After Alasdair Fraser converted a layup to put the Black Bears up 56-54 with eight seconds left, but Binghamton’s Jimmy Gray made a 3-pointer with two seconds left. A Jon Mesghna shot at the buzzer from behind half-court hit the backboard and rim but bounced out.
Maine took a 32-21 halftime lead after finishing the last 9:48 on an 18-to-8 run and holding Binghamton to 7-for-26 shooting through the first 20 minutes.
AMHERST, Mass. — The Colby College men’s basketball team could not make it two wins in a row, falling 98-75 to 16th-ranked Amherst College on Saturday in New England Small College Athletic Conference play at LeFrak Gym.
The Mules (5-10 overall, 2-3 NESCAC) took a win at Trinity College on Friday night, but Amherst’s Aaron Toomey was too much for Colby on Saturday. He poured in a career high-tying 34 points on 13-for-16 shooting and added five rebounds and six assists. Peter Kaasila tallied 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting for Amherst (15-2, 5-0 NESCAC).
UMF 65, MMA 47
CASTINE — Four players reached double figures to lead Maine-Farmington to a 65-47 win over Maine Maritime Academy in a North Atlantic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday. The Beavers improved to 8-2 NAC, 13-3 overall while the Mariners fell to 3-7, 4-11.
Ben Johnson scored a game-high 16 points for UMF, Andrew Dickey added 13 and Yusuf Iman and Garrett Clemmer both netted 11. Johnson also pulled down 10 rebounds.
Brad Reed paced MMA with 10 points, Ben Russell added nine and Paul Campbell and Logan Poirier added eight points each. Poirier grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds.
Eastern Connecticut 87, USM 71
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. — Six players scored in double-figures as the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 87-71 in a Little East Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Geissler Gymnasium.
The Warriors outscored USM 11-4 in the first three and a half minutes of the second half to assume a 47-45 lead with 16:25 to play and never looked back. Warrior junior forward Mike Garrow scored seven of his 15 points in the run, including the go-ahead basket.
Senior forward Sean Bergeron and junior forward James Odneal each scored 16 points to lead the Huskies. Bergeron had a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds and knocked down four three-pointers.
Trinity 69, Bowdoin 67
HARTFORD, Conn. — Sophomore center George Papadeas scored a team-high 18 points and added a game-high eight rebounds to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 69-67 victory over Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men’s basketball action in Ray Oosting Gymnasium on Saturday.
WNE 62, UNE 60
BIDDEFORD — Senior James Hock broke a 60-all tie on a free throw with 0:19 left, then added another foul shot in the closing seconds to provide Western New England University with a 62-60 overtime win over the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference men’s basketball action at the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday.
Rookie Devin Thompson of Winthrop scored 13 of his game-high 16 points after halftime to pace the Nor’easters. Charles Fenner III added 11 points and sophomore Jake Abel eight.
Curry 78, Wentworth 65
BOSTON, Mass – Senior Sedale Jones scored 31 points and junior Lambros Papalambros added 26 as the Curry College men’s basketball team defeated Wentworth, 78-65, Saturday afternoon.
Corey Therriault of Auburn notched seven points on the night to go along with five rebounds.
Wesleyan 61, Bates 51
LEWISTON — Shasha Brown scored 24 points and Mike Callaghan added 18 as Wesleyan University defeated the Bates College men’s basketball team 61-51 in NESCAC action on Saturday.
Bates sophomore Graham Safford led another second-half charge by the Bobcats, scoring 13 of his team-high 18 points in the period. Luke Matarazzo shared in the scoring load, scoring 10 of his 16 points in the half. Ed Bogdanovich had a team-high seven rebounds with two steals.
Women’s basketball
USM 69, Eastern Connecticut
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. — Seniors Haley Jordan and Jordan Grant (Concord, N.H.) each scored 18 points to lead the 13th-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 69-55 women’s basketball win over Little East Conference rival Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors Saturday afternoon at Geissler Gymnasium.
Both Grant and Jordan shot well from the field. Grant was 6-for-9 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line, while Jordan was 7-for-9 from the field including a 3-for-3 mark from three-point range. Senior guard Nicole Garland added 14 points and a career-high seven rebounds and junior guard Erin McNamara tossed in 11 points to compliment three assists and a game-high four steals.
MMA 48, UMF 38
CASTINE — Maine Maritime overcame an early deficit to knock off the University of Maine at Farmington, 48-38, in a North Atlantic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday.
Courtney Dufour scored a team-high nine points for MMA and Bekah Campbell and Hanna Lyons each added eight.Leah Jacksongrabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
Lindsay Ranquist netted a game-high 14 points for UMF and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
UNE 76, WNE 55
BIDDEFORD — Senior Beth Suggs led four University of New England players in double figures with 16 points, as the Nor’easters ran their win streak to seven with a 76-55 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over Western New England University at the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday.
UNE rookie Sadie DiPierro matched her career best with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Sophomore Kelly Coleman was 8 of 8 at the charity stripe to finish with 12 points to go with six boards and four steals, while first-year Alanna Vose added 11 points and four assists. Vose was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Senior Liz LeBlanc of Jay also nailed a trio of 3-pointers to finish with nine points. First-year point guard Meghan Gribbin chipped in a game-best six assists.
Colby 69, Amherst 60
AMHERST, Mass. — Colby College guard Diana Manduca shot 8-for-11 from the field and had 24 points as the Mules battled tough in a 69-60 setback to fourth-ranked Amherst College on Saturday at LeFrak Gym.
Kaitlin Donahoe scored a game-high 16 points in the loss for Bowdoin. Shannon Brady pitched in nine points, seven rebounds and four blocks, while Nina Hadzibabic had nine points off the bench for the Polar Bears. Hannah Brickley led Trinity with 13 points in the win.
Hawkins also blocked the would-be go-ahead shot by the Cardinals with 29 seconds left and corralled the rebound to give Bates its final possession, with the score at 78-78, the 13th tie of the back-and-forth contest. After a timeout, Molly Brown lofted a three-point attempt with four seconds left in the game. The ball skittered to Hawkins, who got off her short layup underneath just before the backboard lit up with red lights.
Brown scored a game-high 27 points with nine rebounds for Bates, while Meredith Kelly added 23 points — career highs for both players.
Women’s hockey
Williams 2, Colby 1
WATERVILLE — The Williams College women’s hockey team scored two goals in the opening 2:26 of the second period and then made the goals stand up in a 2-1 victory over Colby College in NESCAC action Saturday at Alfond Rink.
White, who transferred to UMass Boston this year after spending the past two seasons playing for USM, picked the pocket of a USM defender in the Huskies’ zone and slipped a shot past Southern Maine sophomore goaltender Liz Bergstrom to put the Beacons up 2-1. The goal was a White’s second of the season and second in as many games.
Castleton put out an impressive defensive effort, limiting Southern Maine to just 15 shots on goal while pouring in 30 shots in USM rookie goaltender Josh Hillegas.
Middlebury 9, Colby 2
WILLIAMSTOWN — A day after giving Middlebury College all it could handle, the Colby College men’s hockey team fell 9-2 to Williams College in NESCAC action Saturday.
Leading the offensive charge for the Ephs were forward Cody Skinner, who added two goals and an assist. David Jarrett added a goal and three assists, and Peter Mistretta notched two goals and an assist.
