Pine Cone OES meets May 8

AUBURN — Pine Cone Chapter 26 will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at the Masonic Hall, 1021 Turner St.

The Lewiston Assembly No. 14 Rainbow Girls and Knights of the Sun Demolay Chapter will present a special program at 6:30 p.m.

Refreshments will be served in the dining hall after the meeting.

All Eastern Star members are welcome.

Tri-County Peer Celebration 

LEWISTON — As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, Tri-County Mental Health will hold its first Peer Celebration from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 9, at 80 Strawberry Ave.

The event will feature a panel discussion about the possibilities that await consumers of mental health services, followed by a party with food and a DJ. Special guests are Kelly Staples, Katherine Storer, a representative from NAMI Maine, Simonne Fontaine Malaine and Nancy Michaud.

TCMHS is a nonprofit organization that promotes health and wellness of the citizens of Androscoggin County who experience mental health illness by providing recovery oriented programs and integrated services such as case management, medication management, education and advocacy, peer support, crisis, and adult and child services.

Hands-on cooking class for kids

LEWISTON — A free, hands-on cooking class for kids ages 8 to 12 (all ages welcome) will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, May 12, at The Ark, 791 Lisbon St.

Kids 2 Kids, Cooking Healthy In The Kitchen, is “taught by kids.”

The class will include a breakfast dish, a dinner entree, a healthy dessert and a presentation given by children on tips for staying healthy.

Workshop on ‘Abuse, Trauma and Recovery’

AUBURN — The Corporate and Community Services Division of Central Maine Community College will offer a one-day workshop “Abuse, Trauma and Recovery” from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 29.

Participants will study the theoretical and historical background of abuse. Specific clinical tools for diagnosing and responding to trauma will be used. Participants will also examine several practical scenarios of veterans’ experiences and mental health clients to understand and foster healing in the recovery process. Workshop presentations will be interactive using psychology based art and video resources.

Workshop participants will take away resources to aid them beyond the program and are eligible to receive 0.5 CEUs. The course cost is $99 and includes lunch. Concert raffle benefits Jubilee Center

LEWISTON — The Trinity Jubilee Center is raffling off a pair of tickets to the upcoming Celtic Woman concert at the Bangor Waterfront on May 30.

The Jubilee Center is a community center in downtown Lewiston helping those in need get back on their feet. The center’s five programs run seven days a week and include a soup kitchen, food pantry, day shelter, refugee assistance program and resource center. All proceeds benefit the Jubilee Center’s programs.

Book, bake sale and raffle at Lithgow

AUGUSTA — A book sale, raffle and bake sale, sponsored by the Friends of Lithgow Library, will be held May 15-17 in the Reading Room of Lithgow Public Library, 45 Winthrop St.

All funds raised from the sale will go toward the Friends’ Capital Campaign to renovate and expand the historic library building.

The book sale hours are: Thursday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The bake sale will be held May 15 and 16, during the book sale hours. The book sale, raffle and bake sale are all cash-only.

Tickets for a 50/50 cash drawing and a raffle featuring gift cards from local merchants are on sale at the Adult Services and Youth Services circulation desks until May 17.

Donations of gently used books, audio books, music CDs and DVDs are accepted until May 9. The library does not accept textbooks, encyclopedias, condensed books or moldy items.

Craft, vendor fair May 17 in Durham

DURHAM — Totally Awesome Bulky Waste day and Craft and Vendor Fair will be held, rain or shine, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at First Congregational Church, UCC Durham, 773 Royalsborough Road.

The event will include local crafters, vendors, farmers, musicians, silent auction, raffles, Pineland cheese on sale for $10 per pound and  the sale of frozen apple pies for $10.

Tables are available. Six- and 8-foot tables are $20 and $25; an outside 10-by-10 space is $25. Call 353-2464.

Also available are coffee and muffins early, grilled cheese for lunch and apple pie for dessert. Music will be provided by Jeff and Larissa.

Community art show, bake sale

DURHAM — The Durham Historical Society will hold a Community Art Show and bake sale to benefit the Restoration Fund. The show will be held rain or shine at the Union Church / Old Town Hall on Route 136 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17.

Spring Carnival May 17 in Lisbon

LISBON FALLS — Lisbon’s Junior Athletic League will sponsor a Spring Carnival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, on the Lisbon High School / Philip W. Sugg School campus.

The event is open to the public and will feature face painting, bounce house, carnival games, free balloon sculptures and much more. The parade starts at 9 a.m. with opening ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. with MC Jeff Parsons. Carnival events start at 10 a.m. Come and dunk your favorite teacher or coach from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Soup/chowder/chili and dessert tasting

AUBURN — The Andy Valley Knights of Columbus, Council 8742, in conjunction with the parishioners of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, will hold a soup/chowder/chili and dessert tasting and social from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, in the basement hall of Sacred Heart Church, Western Avenue.

Cost is $10 per person and tickets can be purchased at the door. Proceeds will go towards purchasing new tables for Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish.

LEWISTON — Local veterans groups have close to 3,000 American flags to put on the graves of veterans for Memorial Day.

‘Sunday Afternoon at the Movies’

LEWISTON — The public is invited to join the Holy Cross Knights of Columbus at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 18, in the Holy Cross Church Hall for “Sunday Afternoon at the Movies.”

The movie will be “Johnny,” a story about a young orphan boy dying from leukemia who believes he is on a mission from God. After he is brought into a foster family, Johnny helps a family heal from the loss of their own son due to a tragic accident.

The movie is free and there will be concessions available along with goodwill donations at the door.

Author Doiron to speak at Ricker

POLAND — Maine author Paul Doiron will introduce his new novel, “Bone Orchard,” at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Ricker Memorial Library.

Final Christian Skate Night is free

Senior Citizen and Friends Luncheon

AUBURN — The Auburn United Methodist Church will host a Senior Citizen and Friends Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the church, 439 Park St.

Entertainment will be provided by the ELHS Show Choir. The menu is baked ham, macaroni and cheese, corn casserole, peas, rolls and ice cream pie. Cost is $7 per person.
