Author to speak to Historical Society

STRONG — Guy Rioux, author of “The Franklin County Narrow Gauges — The Next Stop Is Rangeley,” will be the guest speaker at the August meeting of the Strong Historical Society.

Copies of his book will be available and he will conduct a book-signing. He will speak on the subject of his soon-to-be-released volume concerning local conflicts around the Sandy River Railroad and the Franklin & Megantic Railroad.

The book sale and signing will take place at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the Strong Historical Society, 79 North Main St. A potluck supper will take place at 6, a brief business meeting at 7, followed immediately by the guest speaker. The public is invited.

‘Souper’ supper at Chesterville Grange

CHESTERVILLE — The Chesterville Grange will hold a public “souper” supper on Friday, Aug. 8, serving between 5 and 6:30 p.m.

Baked beans, casseroles at Trinity United

FARMINGTON — A public baked bean and casserole supper will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Historical Society open house in Jay

JAY — The annual Jay Historical Society open house will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9.

In addition to visiting the Holmes-Crafts Homestead, the archives building will be open featuring the Riley exhibit’s newest addition of a stained glass window from the former Riley Catholic church.

Larry Wright and Friends will be playing music during the morning, and there will be a yard sale, food sale table, hot dogs and four raffle ticket baskets.

Porter Lake Assoc. annual bean supper

STRONG — The Porter Lake Association will hold its annual public bean supper from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Strong Beach on Porter Lake. It will be in the Forster Building in Strong in case of rain.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 5 to 11. The menu includes bean-hole baked beans, franks, rolls and beverages, and a wide variety of salads and desserts. Please bring a salad or dessert to share.

The dinner supports activities beneficial to the lake, its users, and the lake environment. Strong Beach can be reached from Route 234 (connecting New Vineyard and Strong) turning onto Pond Road and then right again onto Beanies Beach Road.

Campground Band dance at Jay VFW

JAY — A dance will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the VFW Hall, 64 Jewel St.

Music will be provided by the Campground Band.
