LEWISTON — Firefighters put out an early Monday morning fire at Lepage Bakeries on Lisbon Street.

The fire started in a doughnut machine in the basement, Lewiston Fire Inspector Paul Ouellette said. The fire traveled three stories up duct work, Ouellette said.

A passer-by reported flames coming from the roof about 3:15 a.m. Monday. It took crews about 20 minutes to get the flames under control.

Two sprinkler heads in the locker room area that were activated were key in keeping the fire contained until firefighters arrived, Ouellette said.

Because Lepage Bakeries is a food-related business, Ouellette said a state inspector will be involved to determine when the area of the bakery that was affected by the fire can be operational again.

The Auburn Fire Department assisted with the fire while Lisbon and Sabattus fire departments filled in for Lewiston fire stations, Ouellette said.

Lisbon Street reopened before 7 a.m.
