In the post, owners Alyssa Danforth and Jen Swim said the decision followed ongoing financial strain, declining customer traffic and the challenges of operating a small business, compounded by continuing health challenges.

“We wish things were different. We wish heart and grit were enough. But the reality is, they’re not,” the post says.

The owners said they fought to keep the business open but ultimately ran out of options.

“This decision has shattered us. We poured everything we had into this place, and you — our community — poured your love right back into us,” they said.

The reaction on Facebook was swift.

“I’m sure this decision was not made lightly. I’m so sad that it has come to this. Thank you for all that you brought to The Woodsman. The icon will be missed by many,” Penny Wyatt commented on the post.

“The Woodsman was my very first job when I was 15 growing up in Kingfield,” Megan Howell said. “Thanks for keeping the spirit of the Woodsman alive for so many years.”

The Woodsman had been a familiar part of Main Street life, hosting everyday meals as well as long-standing routines and memories for local families and regular customers.

According to the announcement, all remaining funds collected for community meals will be given to Annie’s Market to support and expand its free meal program. The owners also said remaining dry goods and food inventory will be distributed to local food pantries and food assistance programs.

The restaurant’s Facebook business page now lists The Woodsman as permanently closed.
