WILTON — Options for a Village View playground will be discussed when selectmen meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the town office.
A few months ago, Recreation Director Frank Donald told the board the playground is seldom used but older youngsters use the area for a “hangout.” Selectmen agreed to consider other options for the property.
Potential use as a residential property was researched by Selectman Irv Faunce who will ask the board, if it’s interested, to invite Mike Burke, chief executive officer of Community Concepts, to the March 1 meeting to hear a couple options.
Burke and his staff are exploring two alternatives including developing a family home under “Self Help” housing or partnering with Foster Tech on the design and construction of a “green” energy-efficient house.
Within Community Concepts housing program, Faunce said, family homes have been constructed when a group of families get together and help each other build a home through the “Self Help” program. Four or five families work together by rotating their efforts and building houses for each other.
Community Concepts has worked with Foster Tech in the past to rehabilitate portable classrooms and turn them into mobile home residences that are placed in Franklin County, he said.
Meanwhile, Town Manager Rhonda Irish is checking with the Department of Conservation to see what the town can do with the property since federal funds were used to create it.
The town may not be able to take away the three-quarter acre playground and there’s a question on whether, in the case of a sale, any funds from it need to be used to start a new playground or add on to an existing one, she said.
In other business, the board will discuss changing the lieutenant position at Wilton Police Department into a sergeant position, she said.
After taking a look at the needs of the department, she and Police Chief Dennis Brown feel a sergeant may fit the department better as it means less administrative work and more patrol coverage. It also provides for advancement from within the department, she said.
The newly appointed Water/Wastewater Superintendent, Clayton Putnam, will give his first quarterly report to the board. Putnam was recently promoted to the position following the death of Russ Mathers.
