Dick Wagner: Craven works across aisle for high-quality legislation
Lewiston has been very fortunate to have a number of excellent state legislators, and key among them is Margaret Craven. I am so pleased that she is a candidate again for the Maine House of Representatives. Margaret has two critical characteristics that stand out in my mind. First, she is dedicated to promoting health and […]

Pamela Larouche: A proposed alternative to lakeside development
John Gendron, in his guest column (“In defense of my vision to boost affordable housing,” July 23), laments that Auburn citizens opposed to lakeside development have no alternative. But I do. I ask people to consider my vision, my modest proposal. Mr. Gendron can develop his in-town backyard of 32-plus acres, with the zoning quota […]

Camille Parrish: Sheats is trustworthy, focused on solutions
Bettyann Sheats is a smart and compassionate candidate for the Maine Senate who has my vote. Bettyann has the track record in the Maine Legislature to demonstrate that she is concerned with the issues affecting all citizens, from veterans to small business owners to children. She has worked to pass legislation related to reducing toxic […]

I’ve had the pleasure of working with him throughout his time on the Auburn City Council, as well as with Auburn’s Strategic Plan Committee. […]

This is what Trump desires to have — and the political right aspires to give him. The rest of us would do well to understand this, given the mortal threat it poses.

Robert Reed: Lewiston should focus help on those truly wanting it
Lewiston has a homelessness problem, no denying it. The city even created a task force to look into homelessness when the council refused to approve a proposal which seemed to address only one aspect. This follows Lewiston celebrating the opening of a needle exchange program, giving those using illegal drugs the opportunity to do so […]

In rebuttal: Leigh St Pierre-Tribuno: Thomas column spouts speculation, not fact
I write in reference to the ever-objectionable Cal Thomas column published July 20 (“Extreme cases and bad law“). I cannot remember the last time I was so angered by a piece of “journalism.” In one sentence, he accuses the media of a rush to judgment regarding a 10-year-old’s ability to have an abortion in Ohio, […]

President Biden’s hyperbole when it comes to end-of-the-world prophecies follows many similar predictions that failed to materialize.
