UNH meter theft

DURHAM, N.H. (AP) – Thefts of a number of parking meters near University of New Hampshire fraternity houses has officials considering getting rid of the meters entirely.

The town installed meters on the 27 parking spaces along Madbury Road in 2000, hoping to generate more revenue.

But police say the meters never made as much money as initially anticipated. And 10 out of the 27 installed five years ago are missing. Replacing them would cost $6,100.

Because of the missing parking meters, police aren’t able to ticket vehicles parked in those spots. Officials are considering removing the remaining meters and designating the street a two-hour parking zone.
