I would like to know who was responsible for the wording on ballot Question 1, concerning the New England Clean Energy Connect project, to be voted on Nov. 2. The wording is so misleading, which is common, to confuse people who do not read or understand what they are actually voting on. This question should […]

Zoo Cain: Put the brakes on Auburn development
The Auburn mayor is bulldozing the public while we’re going through a pandemic. We have a mayor who is hellbent on getting over the questionable goal line with major rezoning that could change Auburn’s country-scape forever. Mayors should be working for all the people, not be obviously all in for pro-development, while claiming altruism. Land […]
Jonathan Cohen: Corridor would create ‘genuine reduction in atmospheric carbon’
Yes, Central Maine Power is a poorly-run company, owned by an overseas energy conglomerate. Hopefully we will someday replace it here in Maine with a publicly-owned electric utility. For now, this is what we’ve got, and so the issue with the New England Clean Energy Connect corridor is really about carbon reduction. Yes, some trees […]
Michel Lajoie: Sheline would move Lewiston in positive direction
I believe Carl Sheline is the best person to represent Lewiston as mayor. In speaking with Carl, I find that he is very motivated to continue to invest in economic development and also attract new business to our community. Other priorities on his list to accomplish are to improve the city’s image by cleaning up […]
Deborah Avasthi: Question 2 would create ‘good-paying jobs’ for Mainers
I urge Maine voters to vote “yes” on referendum Question 2 on Nov. 2. This $100 million transportation bond would increase to over $350 million with added federal, local and private funds. These funds would support improvements to roads, bridges, airports, marine and rail facilities, tourism, and recreation-related transportation facilities. Thousands of good-paying jobs would […]
Hawo Abdille: Parks deserves reelection to Lewiston School Committee
I am pleased to write this letter to support Megan Parks for reelection to her at-large seat on the Lewiston School Committee. I have known Megan for about five years now, during my time employed with Lewiston public schools. I was impressed by her positivity, energy, motivation and willingness to do what it takes to […]
Gary McGrane: Article 5 on Jay ballot deserves a ‘no’
I ask residents to save our retirement in Jay by voting no on Article 5. Article 5 asks if the town wants to eliminate the guaranteed monthly retirement income for new employees hired after Jan. 1, 2022. Town employees have contributed into the Maine State Retirement System since 1992. If it’s not broken, why fix […]
Beth Gallie: ‘Right to food’ amendment wrong for Maine
Mainers are now voting whether to amend the Maine Constitution to include a “right to food.” Supporters admit that the amendment is not about guaranteeing food for the hungry. In fact, proponents haven’t given us even a single tangible reason for the amendment. Apparently, they plan to use the amendment in court to further the […]
Julie Latuscha: Reelect Beauparlant to Lewiston School Committee
As an educator and mother of two school-aged children, I encourage residents to support Paul Beauparlant in his bid for reelection to the Lewiston School Committee, Ward 7. Paul has devoted his life to education, spending 43 years in the classroom as a teacher and department chair, never failing to put students first. He has […]
Rich Lowry: Rationality is not a white male thing
The New York Times ran a report the other day on the canceling of University of Chicago geophysicist Dorian Abbot for his dissenting views on affirmative action. The paper quoted a Williams College geosciences professor, Phoebe A. Cohen, who supports Abbot’s shunning. She explained her dim view of academic freedom thusly, “This idea of intellectual debate and rigor as the pinnacle of intellectualism comes from a world in which white men dominated.”
