The director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention says managers of the Tyson Foods poultry processing plant in Portland have agreed to extend a closure so the CDC can trace the contacts of infected workers.

The number of cases at the Tyson Foods plant in Portland rose to 17 on Monday as testing of all 400-plus employees continued.

Contributing to the spike is an outbreak of at least 20 cases at the Hope House homeless shelter in Bangor, which Maine CDC officials are tracking alongside an outbreak at Portland’s Tyson Foods plant.

Data show that Mainers 80 or older account for just 13% of the cases but roughly half of the deaths. Health care workers account for the most cases, because they are exposed to the virus and are tested regularly.

The number of people who have recovered from COVID-19 surpasses active cases in the state for the first time on Tuesday.

The additional deaths included a man in his 80s from Androscoggin County who was the first reported death in that county.
