Defund the police? Someone’s breaking into my home. Let’s see, who do I call? The school board, the mayor? Does anyone even truly consider this? Let’s think about our public school system. No God, no Pledge of Allegiance, no morals, no respect for authority, only political correctness. The Left and most Democrats believe only their […]

Bob Mennealy: Will happily vote for Golden
I find it very ironic for two reasons that the three GOP contenders for Jared Golden’s U.S. House seat are: 1) Anti-immigrant when Maine definitely could use an influx of talented immigrants to replenish our aging labor pool, or citizenry in general as Maine reportedly has one of the oldest populations of any state, and […]
Jane Costlow: Realities of our history are harsh
Occasionally Mark LaFlamme writes a column I find amusing. But his piece on “Cancel Culture” (Sun Journal, June 21) was not one of them. Rambling and “snarky,” he defends Loony Tunes in one sentence and in the next (tongue in cheek) applauds “the decision to pull that hateful “Gone With the Wind” from the shelves […]
Kristen Cloutier: Sara Gideon will fight for Maine
Having served as a state representative, mayor, and city councilor, I feel we need to elect leaders to Washington who understand the everyday challenges of local governments. As a former town councilor and current speaker of the House, Sara Gideon has firsthand experience with figuring out annual budgets and working closely with constituents — skills […]
Gary Dennis: We need some integrity in politics
I am a citizen of the U.S.A., product of hard-working blue collar folks, served four years in the military, worked and paid my way through life, and wish what is best for this arguably good nation (yea, lots of room for improvements). How did we get to the place where the only choice for the […]
Andrew Tasker: Are we finally ready to organize?
The founding fathers would be mortified at the condition of their/our country. Attacks on democracy by anti-immigrant Republican white backlash in the shape of xenophobia, Islamophobia, and the scapegoating and assaults on undocumented immigrants. However, undocumented immigrants contributed $5 trillion to the U.S. economy over the last 10 years. They paid $13 billion in Social […]
Mark Wood: Staggering statistics on abortion
Anyone who has a heart and a soul will agree that black lives matter. But the sad truth is that abortion rates in the United States are highest by ethnic grouping among African-Americans. Depending upon where one mines his data (Kaiser Family Foundation, CDC, Guttmacher Institute, Abort73, Arizona Capitol Times), African-Americans make up anywhere from […]
Bette J. Swett-Thibeault: John Nutting is the best candidate
I support the candidacy of John Nutting of Leeds for the Maine Legislature in 2020. John is a person of integrity, honesty, compassion. These are attributes that are sorely needed in politicians these days of unrest in politics. John has served in the Maine Legislature where, as a farmer himself, he served on the Agriculture […]
Douglas MacIsaac: Be wary of Sen. Collins
Be careful of what you approve. I like to think I’m an independent voter and have voted for Susan Collins in the past because I thought she had the welfare of this state in mind. Instead, she voted along party lines for the acquittal of a president who I believe is the ultimate white supremacist […]
Steven Reed: Time to take a stand for solutions
We will soon celebrate this nation’s birthday and it could be the very last. We are heading down a path our founders tried to avoid. All lives matter, not just Black. The leaders of this movement want armed members to take the law into their own hands to bring their form of justice. This could […]
